Tonga : tsunami situation report 4
22 Oct 2009. Almost a month after the tsunami struck the island of Niuatoputapu in northern Tonga, the government continues to head efforts towards early recovery and reconstruction. Priority health needs in Niuatoputapu are refurbishment of the hospital including the replacement of hospital supplies and equipment, long term solution of rebuilding the hospital at a safer location, Continuous, properly monitored clean water supply, proper sanitation facilities for people still living in temporary shelter, sanitary needs for women. Vaccine and cold chain capability to be in place in case of infectious disease outbreaks, oral rehydration salts in case of outbreak of diarrhoeal diseases and psychosocial support

Situation report 11. Report issued by OCHA New York, with inputs from OCHA Fiji and the OCHA Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. An estimated 4,500 people have been directly affected by the tsunami, most of who are displaced. The situation is gradually shifting from emergency phase to early recovery. In the meantime, access to sufficient water for the displaced population is identified as a problem by the water sector. Strategic planning is underway to address this issue. Sanitation also remains a concern and building of pit latrines is ongoing as a priority short-term intervention

Tonga tsunami : NEMO sitrep 4 ; 1300 hrs ; 20th October 2009
Situation report 4. 20/10/2009. 1300hrs. National Emergency Management Office. Tonga tsunami. A state of emergency was declared for Niuatoputapu by the acting Prime Minister, the Honourable Tuita on the 30th September at 3pm local time. The state of emergency remains in place. The emergency response of this operation, led by Colonel Latu (TDS) is now in its final phases. Sufficient emergency shelter, food, water and clothing have been delivered to the islands to support the people in the immediate to short term

covered from 13-15 October. The death toll in Samoa is 143, 5 people
are still missing. An early recovery framework was submitted to the
Government of Samoa on 15 October. As the rainy season will soon begin
in Samoa, the need for transitional shelters or semipermanent housing
will become more apparent. 9 deaths were reported in Tonga. HMNZS
Canterbury arrived in Apia, Samoa, from Tonga on 15 October, carrying
various relief items and reconstruction equipment. While distribution
of relief items continues, early-recovery activities are well underway

Disaster response situation report 2 : October 1st ; Samoan earthquake and tsunami
8am. October 1st. Samoan earthquake and tsunami. Yesterdays earthquake and resulting tsunami have caused significant damage and loss of life in Samoa. Caritas Samoa teams were quick to respond with an initial assessment team sent out within hours of the quake. Initial needs assessments on the South side of Upolu (Inlcuding the Villages of Si umi and Falali ili I have indicated an immediate need for food, water and shelter. Requests have been made to the Samoan Red Cross for this assistance

NEOC sitrep 6. 9/10/09. 1600hrs. National Emergency Operation Centre. Samoa tsunami. A magnitude 8.3 earthquake occurred at 0648 hours on Tuesday 29 September 2009 190 km south of Apia. The earthquake triggered tsunami waves which impacted Samoa, American Samoa and the small northern island of Niauatoputapu in Tonga. The tsunami waves, some of which are said to have been as high as six metres, caused fatalities, casualties and serious damage to the affected Pacific Island countries

The death toll in Samoa is 138, 6 people are still missing. The Ministry of Health estimated that 4,500 people are directly affected by the Tsunami. In Samoa, family food security is considered very fragile due to the tsunami impact on livelihood. Loss of pigs and poultry, fishing gears and canoes urgently needs replacement as means to restore livelihood activities that ensure family protein source. In Samoa, reopening of schools is a priority. A rapid environmental impact and needs assessment is taking place in Samoa. The Government of Tonga's Early Recovery Plan will be ready early next week

7/10/09. Pacific tsunami sitrep 24. NZMFAT. The official death toll remains at 142 and 7 missing. The national memorial service organised by the National Council of Churches will be held at 3pm on Thursday 8 October (Samoa time) at Apia Park Stadium. Situation report 6. Report issued by OCHA New York, with inputs from OCHA Fiji and OCHA Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. Period from 6 a.m. on 5 October to 7 p.m. on 7 October. The death toll in Samoa is 138, six people are still missing. Approximately 3,200 people (640 families) are homeless. An early recovery assessment was conducted in Samoa. A national memorial service will be held on 8 October in Samoa, and it has been declared a National Mourning Day. In Samoa, additional emergency shelters are required until a durable solution is identified. Displaced people want to resettle away from the shoreline. In Tonga nine deaths have been reported, with 465 people affected and more than 300 people homeless on the island of Niuatoputapu

The official death toll in Samoa remains at 142, with 335 casualties and 7 missing, a 3 hour mini telethon on TVNZ's Good Morning show raised over $100,000 for the victims of the tsunami. The official death toll in Tonga remains at nine, with seven seriously injured, Tongan Cabinet seems to be tending towards a decision to relocate the village of Hihifo to higher ground. An earthquake of magnitude 8.3 and depth 33 kms struck in the Samoa
Islands Region, coordinates 15.3 South, 171.0 West at approximately
1748 GMT 29 Sep (5.48 am 30 Sept Fiji time). This earthquake did
generate a Tsunami. Forecast heights were between 7 and 1.57m
