Pacific Islanders make their case in Geneva

SPC SOPAC Division News, 26 May 2011. Pacific Island delegates told participants attending the Third Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva 8 - 13 May that their countries and territories remain highly disaster prone and that the region is threatened by natural hazards of geological and meteorological origin, according to Dr. Russell Howorth, Director SOPAC. UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon, who was the keynote speaker, noted that the aim of the conference was to reduce disaster risk through technology, knowledge and economic tools, and called for accelerating efforts in building resilience and a coalition of action for disaster risk reduction

More emphasis needed for disaster risk reduction

Vanuatu Daily Post News, 27 May 2011. Although being the first in the Pacific region to develop a National Action Plan (NAP) for Disaster Risk Reduction and Disaster Management (DRR-DM), there is room for more when it comes to DRR. National Disaster Management Office’s Research and Planning Officer, Peter Korisa made the statement after returning from the Third Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 8 to 13. The Global Platform also included the first World Reconstruction Conference (WRC), hosted by the World Bank, creating even further opportunities to highlight and address development challenges in responding to disasters triggered by natural hazards.
