Concept note

Title: For Safer and More Resilient Pacific Island Nations and Communities

Requested by: Applied Geoscience and Technology Division (SOPAC) of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) on behalf of the Pacific DRM Partnership Network.

Organization(s) presenting the exhibit: National Disaster Risk Management Offices and members of the Pacific Disaster Risk Management Partnership Network, more details to be confirmed

Contents of the Exhibit: The exhibition booth will present a broad spectrum of disaster risk management initiatives currently undertaken in the Pacific region with the aim to share lessons learned, good practices and new approaches. The topics covered by the exhibit will include:

  • - Regional and national DRM strategies and action plans;
  • - DRM tools and guidelines;
  • - Technical and scientific reports;
  • - DRM awareness material and information brochures;
  • - The Pacific Disaster Net;
  • - Posters and film spots;

Some of the information displayed at the booth will be available free of charge. The booth will serve as a meeting point for everyone interested in the unique context of disaster risk management in the Pacific region where nations and communities are exposed to enormous environmental and economic threats from natural hazards and the impacts from climate change. The members of the Pacific DRM Partnership Network hope the exhibition will provide opportunities for establishing new contacts and for expanding its partnership to new national, regional and international DRM experts.

Call for material

We like to exhibit relevant DRM material from our region in the Pacific booth in the Marketplace during the Global Platform in Geneva (8 – 13 May 2011).

With reference to the Concept note above - please contact us (E-mail: jutta@sopac.org) if you like to display your material.

Given the limited space in the booth (3x2m) we appreciate your feedback and details of products, materials and reports that you would like to exhibit at the Marketplace . Please respond by Thursday, 31st March.

With Pacific Disaster Net we can upload and display all your information anyway - including your reports, awareness material, videos etc. - if you send them to us soon !

In terms of the Pacific booth at the Marketplace we are also considering a small display of Pacific artefacts / handicraft . If you wish to display a few small pieces please do bring them along. Note though that there isn't much space for the displays and so just bring 1 or 2 small pieces (that can be accommodated in your airline luggage allowance) .

Please download the concept note and call for material here.
