Situation
Two earthquakes (6.5 and 7.2) struck near Rendova and Tetepare Islands, some 88km
SSE of Gizo, in Western Province on Monday 4
th
January 2010. The 7.2 one generated a
tsunami to hit the southern and northern coast of the island and nearby Tetepare. The area
of interest is between Hopongo, Mbaniata and Retavo in the south and Rano in the north.
An aftershock of 6.9 on Tuesday night, 5
th
January, affected Marovo lagoon.

Scope and scale
Population affected: 8067; total households, 958; 313 house-holds affected vis 304 families,
dwelling houses damaged: 135.

Government :
NDC finally this afternoon to deliberate on recovery plan.
Two NDMO officers still manning the Munda PEOC.

Private Business:
Bemobile donated SBD100,000 to the NDC yesterday for the reconstruction phase.

International Assistance:

The Republic of China on Taiwan has donated $300,000 to Prime Minister Dr
Derek Sikua yesterday, (Mon 18/01).
•
A SOPAC geologist (Michael Bonte) is in Munda with local geologists Thomas
Toba and Douglas Billy to travel to Rendova tomorrow.
•
Georgia Institute of Technology – USA: Technical assessment of tsunami run-up
and possible uplift to reefs in Rendova. No further updates available.

Recovery and shelter recovery plans will be presented to partners early or mid
next week.

Distributions by the multi-sector teams have finished except for Fotufie and one
or two other villages later this week. Further distributions halted till the weather
