1.
Situation
Two earthquakes (6.5 and 7.2) struck near Rendova and Tetepare Islands, some 88km
SSE of Gizo, in Western Province on Monday 4
th
January 2010. The 7.2 one generated a
tsunami to hit the southern and northern coast of the island and nearby Tetepare. The area
of interest is between Hopongo, Mbaniata and Retavo in the south and Rano in the north.
An aftershock of 6.9 on Tuesday night, 5
th
January, affected Marovo lagoon.
2.
Scope and scale
Population affected: 8067; total households, 958; 313 house-holds affected vis 304 families,
dwelling houses damaged: 135.
3.
Response by different partners:
a.
Government :
NDC met today to deliberate on recovery plan.
Two NDMO officers still manning the Munda PEOC. Health authorities in Western
Province working with SIRC and ADRA officers to address health issues in affected
communities.
b.
Police:

•
Silas Arukwai, Western Provincial Disaster Officer, and George Baragamu of
NDMO are still manning the PEOC in Mund: telephone
62306, Fax: 62307.
d.
Health:
•
WHO is assisting the Ministry of Health with the launch of a surveillance system
to monitor the health conditions of affected population. WHO and MOH are
preparing for a campaign to respond and prevent health problems in the affected
areas.

ORS to Ministry of Health (MOH). Distribution of these items will be managed
by Helena Goldie Hospital.
-WASH: Provision of 9,000 water purification tablets with flyers and 1,000
“hands” flyers. Distribution will be managed by ADRA and MOH.

SIRC:
•
Already installed its water purification system at Mbaniata
•
1 canoe and outboard motor
•
Supporting relief distribution through personnel.
f.
NGOs:
•
Save the Children is waiting to act on the recovery/shelter plans.
•
World Vision supporting with 1 boat and 40HP OBM, personnel to distribute
relief.
•
Oxfam supporting with 1 OBM, canoe and personnel to distribute relief.
•
UNICEF erected three tents at Mbaniata to support medical issues and also a
classroom.
•
ADRA deployed personnel to address water issues; hired two boats: a barge and a
boat to support distributions.

Private Business:
Kenny Wong donated $200.00
h.
International Assistance:
•
The US Government has donated US$75,000 to support SIRC in its relief and
other support
•
The New Zealand government has donated NZ$50,000 or SBD250,000 to support
the SIRC and NDMO.
•
The Republic of China on Taiwan has donated $300,000 to Prime Minister Dr
Derek Sikua yesterday, (Mon 18/01).
•
A SOPAC geologist arrived today and will travel to Munda then on to Rendova
tomorrow (20/1).
•
Georgia Institute of Technology – USA: Technical assessment of tsunami run-up
and possible uplift to reefs in Rendova

Recovery and shelter recovery plans being looked at the National Disaster

Distributions by the multi-sector teams have finished except for Fotufie and one
or two other villages later this week. Munda Police have advised against
travelling due to bad weather in the area. Distributions will delay for 24 hours.

The National Disaster Council met late today to discuss about recovery issues for the
affected Rendova and Nggatokae affected communities.
The following is a rundown on activities carried out by the Munda-based teams:
Tuesday 12
th
:
Health team from SIRC and ADRA held briefing in the evening; PDO met with
US personnel and briefed on areas to be covered; PDO met with UNICEF officer
to explain their role in the operation; Team 1 and 2 which visited Vangunu and
Nggatokae arrived in Munda at 5pm; A warehouse was sorted out for stocking
Wednesday 13
th
:
SIRC and ADRA health teams leave for Mbaniata to join a Provincial health team
already there; Assessment report and media release sent to NDMO; UNICEF officer
sorted out items on board barge from Honiara. He apologized for the issue of independent
assessment made through RARP. He mentioned the Health kits would be distributed by

health officer under prescription of doctors; Team 1 continued analyzing reports so a
media release could follow; Team 2 continued finalizing data for relief operation
Ship from Honiara arrived in Munda 10pm and spent the night. Unloading was done the
next morning; 6 boats from stakeholders were ready for distribution
Thursday 14
th
:
Unloading of goods from Honiara
Fuel sorted for boats
Briefing for partner agencies and boat assignments, movements
Delegated responsibilities to agencies to be in charge of certain activities to avoid
duplication:
Lorima Tuke, Oxfam: responsible for welfare; Ogier Kiko, SIRC: Warehousing; Bensly
Bamu, SIRC; Administration: Silas Arukwai, WPDO/NDMO; Distribution team leader:
Stephen Harry, World Vision; distribution members: SIRC volunteers, World Vision and
NDMO.
Relief started at Mbaniata and covered Hopongo, Havila and Mbaniata, lasted one day.
World Vision, SIRC, ADRA (2 boats) RWSS Gizo and OXFAM transported goods to
Mbaniata
Friday 15
th
:
Loading relief distributions began 9am; distribution hampered by limited space on boats used;
Sombu and Hopongo to be covered next day.
Saturday 16
th
:
Mbaniata completed; Immigration boat added to the fleet for next day; briefed partners about
activities for the next day.
Sunday 17
th
:
Distributions for Hopongo, Vanikuva. Limited capacity and bad weather affected distributions.
Monday 18
th
:
Completed Vanikuva; Bangopingo and Rano; Fotufie next.
Tuesday 19
th
:
Weather outlook for Munda station showed rain and strong winds would continue indefinitely.
Police advised against travelling. Partners advised to fill their individual reports while waiting
for weather to improve.
