Cyclone evacuation centers close
Saturday, December 26, 2009
All evacuation centers around the country have been closed since Wednesday
and Thursday this week.
The evacuation centers were opened last week in the aftermath of Tropical
Cyclone Mick.
Disaster management Committee's relief co-coordinator Anthony Blake
confirmed the evacuation centers in the Central Division closed on Wednesday
evening.
The evacuation centers in the Western Division closed on Thursday at 6pm,
while there were 12 families seeking shelter.
"All families who evacuated to the centers left yesterday for their homes," Mr
Blake said.
"No evacuation centers are open today.
"The DISMAC team will distribute tarpaulins and leftover donations tomorrow."
Mr Blake said a complete damage report would be released on Tuesday next
week.
"From the report we will be able to identify the level of damage around the
country and it will give us an indication of the rehabilitation programs needed and
the long-term recovery period," he said.
"With regards to Christmas celebrations, every evacuee is in his or her village."
Four people in Fiji died in the cyclone, which then headed for Tonga.
