Disaster management office ready
Saturday, January 02, 2010
THE national disaster management system is prepared for further cyclones
predicted by the weather officer.
National Disaster Management Office acting director Pajiliai Dobui said while the
weather office has predicted 11 cyclones, the prediction was the whole Pacific.
"It doesn't mean all cyclones will hit Fiji," he said.
"The prediction is for the whole Pacific, from the West coast of Australia, from
Tahiti to Chile.
"Fiji experiences about two cyclones per year and a lot we only experience rains
from cyclones that come our way.
"Our system is prepared and we are set for cyclones."
Mr Dobui said the onus lay with individuals to play their part and prepare
themselves.
"The first preparedness lie with the individuals," he said.
"If that preparedness is not there then there is only so much we can do."
