Red Cross Distributes Water & Hygiene Packs to Squatter 

Settlements 

 

While piped water supply has begun to reach many residential areas, people living in 
squatter settlements continue to complain about the quality of the water reaching 
their homes.   
 
Red Cross through its field assessments have identified residents in the squatter 
settlement areas within the Suva – Nausori corridor as the most vulnerable to 
hygiene related diseases and the urgent need for clean drinking water.   
 
With the assistance of UNICEF, NZAID and AUSAID, our personnel and volunteers 
have began to distribute water and hygiene packs to residents at the identified 
settlements.   
 
The content of a water and hygiene pack is: 

(i)

 

4 x 10 litres collapsible water containers 

(ii)

 

4 x packets Aqua purification tablets 

(iii)

 

4 x bars of anti-bacterial soap 

(iv)

 

1 x hand wash poster and hygiene related material. 

 
Our trained Health and Care programme officers are visiting these settlements to 
ensure that community members especially women and children have access to safe 
drinking water and are not prone to water borne/ hygiene related diseases that are 
usually  prevalent in the aftermath of disasters. 
 
As we gear up for the festive long weekend, we wish all members of the Public a safe 
Holiday Season and we urge people to ensure that all their property and belongings 
are secured as we are in the midst of our Cyclone season.
