07 January 09: warnings of heavy rain by the Met Office & the 
general public advised to prepare before flood waters rose
08 January 09: heavy rain commenced and Nadi flooded first, 
followed by Ba  and Sigatoka.  DISMAC was activated.
09 January 09: tropical depression located 420 kms west-southwest 
of Nadi resulting in heavy rains throughout Fiji.
10 January 09: rain subsided and initial floods receded
11 January 09: State of Natural Disaster was declared for the whole 
of western division by the Prime Minister
13 January 09: Government assistance Evacuation Centres,  
tourists transported to the airport.  Food rations and security provided 
at Evacuation Centres.
14 Jan – 11 Feb: Relief ration distribution and immediate to short 
term rehabilitation

into account the 2009 Budget objectives of growing 
the economy and alleviating poverty.
Prioritize agricultural programmes to target food 
security – continue with supplying planting materials 
and other agro-inputs.
Approach development partners for assistance for 
rehabilitation and re-building infrastructure and 
assisting families.

Chamber of Commerce to coordinate the request of 
individual businesses to Government, FDB and 
Commercial Banks.
Review insurance legislation as most companies do 
not provide insurance cover for floods and how they 
can actively participate in investments.
Tourism related areas are to be excluded from the 
declared disasters zone, subject to assurance from 
relevant agencies – this will reduce travel insurance 
costs.

Coordinate with local and international NGOs 
assistance in the distribution of other relief 
assistance to affected communities.
Dissemination of information through the Ministry of 
Information on Govt’s effort towards rehabilitation 
and re-construction.
Ministry of Housing to consider options to assist 
those whose homes were destroyed.
Assessments on damage and dredging of major 
rivers in the urban centres to be carried out and 
necessary measures implemented to reduce future 
flooding (watershed management).
