Cyclone or not stay alert
Wednesday, November 18, 2009
THE Nadi weather office has warned people not to take warnings lightly despite no cyclone
development.
Department of Meteorology director Rajendra Prasad said the spell of rain and cold weather
affecting the country was caused by a trough of low pressure approaching the group from the west.
He said it would take another two days to get close to the country.
He said as the trough of low pressure got closer to Fiji, the air would be warmer.
"With the El Nino effect in place, whatever rainfall we get will not be able to offset the dry spell
which will be experienced in the Western Division."
Mr Prasad said rainfall was expected to be below average next month.
He said the weather pattern would not bring strong winds but visibility would be affected because
of rainfall.
Mariners have been cautioned to be careful while at sea.
The cyclone season in Fiji is generally from November to April.
