Update: ADRA provides urgently needed supplies for tsunami
survivors in Samoa

Date: 20 Oct 2009
SILVER SPRING, Md. —In Samoa, where a recent deadly tsunami killed 140
people and affected approximately 4,500 others, the Adventist Development and
Relief Agency (ADRA) is helping survivors through the distribution of garden and
kitchen kits, targeting families along the southern coast of the island of Upolu, which
bore the brunt of the tsunami.
"The majority of the affected households have lost all of their possessions, so these
are the types of things that have been identified by them as priority needs," said
Robert Patton, an ADRA emergency management specialist.
The intervention is in addition to ADRA's initial response, which is currently
providing food relief for families in three villages in southern Upolu, which include
Saleaumaua, Satitoa and Saleapaga.
"The village of Saleapaga has been totally destroyed, and the community has been
forced to relocate," said Patton. "Through this intervention, we will able to provide
ongoing relief support for those affected by the tsunami from each of these three
villages."
Each household will receive a garden kit that includes a machete, axe, and a spade.
Additionally, ADRA will provide families with a kitchen kit, which contains two food
storage containers, six plates, cups, cutlery, one pot, and one pan.
A total of 1,500 people, or 211 households, will benefit from this two-week response.
The project is valued at an estimated $50,000, and is funded by ADRA Australia,
ADRA International, ADRA Canada, ADRA Finland, ADRA Sweden, and ADRA
United Kingdom.
On Tuesday, September 29, an 8.3 magnitude earthquake shook the Samoa region,
triggering a powerful tsunami that caused widespread devastation to American
Samoa, Samoa, and the small island of Niuatoputapu in Tonga.
