Volunteers offer help
Wednesday, October 07, 2009
CLOSE to 100 volunteers have been helping the Samoa Red Cross with the distribution
of supplies and donations to affected families on Upolu Island.
Samoa Red Cross health coordinator Goretti Wulf said distributions are continuing on the
south side of Upolu Island.
"We are now moving to Manono Island for an assessment of the area to provide affected
families with supplies," she said from Samoa yesterday.
"There has been a lot of support from locals and overseas. We have been working in the
field since the tsunami.
"We have a lot of volunteers from the Peace Corps and volunteers from Australia and
New Zealand."
She said these volunteers have donated their time and vehicles to transporting supplies
for distribution.
Tongan Government spokesman Alfred Soakai said government officials and donor
agency representatives are expected to arrive in Niuatoputapu Island today.
He said the donor agencies include AusAID, NZAid and the United Nations.
In American Samoa, the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency
Management Agency are continuing its efforts to provide federal support to the US
territory.
