Responding to multiple disasters around the world
Source: Convoy of Hope (COH)
Date: 05 Oct 2009
It is a time like no other. Convoy of Hope staff and teams are responding to 4 major
disasters in 4 separate countries around the world. With teams still working in Georgia
after severe flooding left thousands unable to return to their homes, Staff have been
dispatched to the Philippines, the Samoa Islands, and Indonesia. According to staff in the
Philippines, the Philippine Islands have seen $5 billion in damages, 300 confirmed deaths
and over 200 missing citizens. Five hundred and seventy thousand families have been
affected so far. Our team reports lines one mile long at evacuation camps in several
places, with residents waiting in the rain for two cans of sardines, rice, two packages of
noodles and a pair of flip flops. The government has issued a State of Calamity (similar to
Marshall Law) for the next 30 days.
In one town, we were able to supply food for a church to feed 1200 people and food bags
for 200 families. We are setting up a water purification unit that is capable of producing
10,000 gallons of pure water per day. We went shopping for cook kits and sleeping mats to
replace those that were lost for over 300 families. Can you help?
In another community we had two distribution sites active that prepared food and fed over
900 children and distributed bags of groceries to nearly 400 families (2000 people). In
addition Federal Express is working with us to air ship in snack boxes, pasta and face
masks.
We have teams en route to Indonesia set to respond to the victims of a massive
earthquake that followed on the heels of the tsunami that struck the Samoa Islands where
an assessment team is just arriving.
These disasters, although unrelated, have had a chilling effect on entire countries.
Hundreds have been killed. Thousands are homeless. People struggle to find food and
water each day. These are the people we are helping with your support. Your online
donation will have an immediate impact on children and their families.
