Gaua Island, 13 October 2009

After the assessment of the geohazards team on Gaua volcano from 3-7 October 2009, it is confirmed
that Mont Garet volcano is going through an eruptive phase starting from the 27

of September 2009.

Seismic records of the the seismic station installed on Gaua show that many explosions occurred on
gaua volcano (see seismic records below 11/10/09). Volcanic gas flux measurements on October 3

show  that  3000  tonnes  of  sulfuric  dioxide  is  released  from  this  volcano  each  day,  this  means  that  a
significant  quantity  of  magma  is  degassing  from  gaua  volcano.  Lake  letas  we  I  raonem  Mont  Garet

which is drained out through the river of the Waterfall.

With  this  information,  the  Alert  level  of  this  volcano  is  now  raised  to  Level  2  on  the  Vanuatu
Volcano Alert Level (VVAL). This means that this volcano is going through a minor eruption. It is not
recommended to approach the volcano. The danger remains in the red zone area on the hazard map
including all the river outlets in Gaua, especially the river of waterfall (see Hazard map).
With  the  related  alert  level,  a  level  of  response  from  the  community  is  required  (see  attached
Community Disaster response plan).
Geohazards  is  doing  its best  with  the  limited  resources  available  to  continue  monitoring  this  volcano.

Apres l’evaluation de l’activite du volcan Mont Garet par une equipe de la section Geohazards du 3 au
7  Octobre,  il  est  confirme  que  ce  volcan  est  entre  dans  une  nouvelle  phase  erruptive  depuis  le  27
septembre 2009. Les données sismiques recuperes d’une station simique installe par cette equipe sur
Gaua montyrent l’occurrence de plusieurs explosions de ce volcan (voir donnees sismiques ci-dessous
du  11  Octobre  2009).     Les  mesures  de flux  gaz  volcaniques  sortant  de  ce  volcan  le  03  Octobre  ont
confirme que 3000 tonne de dioxyde de souffres ont ont dégazé par jour, ce qui veut dire qu’il existe
une quantité significative de magma qui dégaze du volcan de Gaua.
A noter que le lac Letas entourant le volcan Mont Garet contien 800 millions de mètres cube qui se vide
par la rivière de la cascade de Gaua.

En conséquence, le niveau d'alerte volcanique du volcan de Gaua est élevé au niveau 2, selon le
Niveau d'Alerte Volcanique du Vanuatu (VVAL). Il y a un danger direct près du cratère et du lac au
sommet au niveau de la zone rouge ainsi qu’au niveau des rivières, surtout la rivière de la cascade de
Gaua (voir carte de risque). L'approche du volcan est vivement déconseillée.

Avec ce niveau d’Alert, il y a un minimum d’action recommandé pour les communautés (voir fichier
attache du plan de réponse de la communauté).
