SAMOAN ISLANDS –

On 29 September, a series of tsunamis triggered by an
undersea earthquake (magnitude 8.0) hit the Samoan Islands.

Samoa: 129 deaths were confirmed and the estimative is
more than 1000 injured. WHO is providing technical
assistance to the Ministry of Health and the United Nations
Disaster Management Team has sent an expert to assist in the
coordination of international support. The death toll is
expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search for
victims in villages submerged and severely affected by the
waves.
Tonga: 9 deaths were confirmed. There were no official
requests from government for international assistance.
American Samoa: 24 confirmed deaths. The infrastructure of
the LBJ hospital did not sustain damage and is providing all
health services by the emergency rooms. The Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and others federal
agencies are providing support to the American Samoa.
The Pan American Health Organization's has offered to make
available an experienced regional response team to assist the
region affected by the tsunami.
INDONESIA – EARTHQUAKE

Two earthquakes struck the island of Sumatra within
24 hour period (magnitude 7.6 and 7.0), causing 715
deaths and 2,400 injured. Major damage to building
and infrastructure is reported, 20,000 houses are
affected. Several roads remain blocked due to
landslides. The government of Indonesia is leading the
emergency response. An emergency phase has been
declared and Padang post has been set up. A field
hospital has been established and the International Red
Cross has deployed medical teams within country.
Preliminary international assistance has been provided
by the United Nations and also by a number of
countries, Spain, Brazil, Norway, Canada Australia,
China, United States and the European Union. The
estimative is that over 3,000 people might be trapped
under damaged buildings; the death toll is also

COLOMBIA – Volcano

The Galeras volcano erupted at a reported activity of level II.
No deaths or injuries have been reported, but the alert level is
kept due to the possibility of new events.

El 29 de septiembre, una serie de tsunamis provocados por
un terremoto submarino (de magnitud 8,0) azotaron las Islas
Samoa. (Fuente: informe de situación de OCHA # 4).
Samoa: 129 muertes fueron confirmadas con una estimación
de más de 1000 heridos. La OMS está prestando asistencia
técnica al Ministerio de Salud y el Equipo de Manejo de
Desastres de las Naciones Unidas ha enviado un experto para
ayudar en la coordinación del apoyo internacional. El
número de muertos se espera que aumente a medida que los
equipos de rescate continúan la búsqueda en las aldeas
sumergidas gravemente afectadas por las olas.
Tonga: 9 muertes fueron confirmadas. No hubo una petición
oficial del Gobierno de asistencia internacional.
Samoa Americana: 24 muertes confirmadas. La
infraestructura del hospital LBJ no sufrió daños y se está
ofreciendo todos los servicios de salud en las salas de
emergencia. La Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA) y otras agencias federales están proporcionando
apoyo a Samoa Americana.

causando 715 muertes y 2.400 heridos. Se ha informado de
daños importantes en las construcciones y las
infraestructuras, 20.000 viviendas están afectadas. Varias
carreteras siguen bloqueadas por deslizamientos de tierra. El
Gobierno de Indonesia está liderando la respuesta de
emergencia. Una fase de emergencia ha sido declarada y se
ha establecido un puesto en Padang. Se ha establecido un
hospital de campaña y la Cruz Roja Internacional ha
desplegado equipos médicos dentro del país. La asistencia
internacional más inmediata ha sido proporcionada por las
Naciones Unidas y también por diversos países, incluyendo a
España, Brasil, Noruega, Canadá, Australia, China, Estados
Unidos y la Unión Europea. La estimación es que más de
3.000 personas podrían estar atrapadas bajo los edificios

COLOMBIA – Volcán

El volcán Galeras hizo erupción en un nivel de
actividad reportado de nivel II. No se han reportado
muertos ni heridos, sin embargo el nivel de alerta se
mantiene debido a la posibilidad de nuevos eventos.
