PRESS RELEASE
Tsunami Event
The Government of Samoa has compiled preliminary assessments noting that the most affected
areas were around the South and South East coasts of Upolu. Resorts, family homes, community
buildings, roads, and utilities located in these areas were badly damaged or destroyed. The
preliminary cost of damage to infrastructure, homes, community infrastructure, small
businesses, water, electricity, and communication is estimated at around SAT$153.6million but
is expected to be much higher once detailed sectoral assessments are completed.
To date, reported numbers of casualties is 123 with injuries totaled at 310 out of which 62 are
admitted with 248 treated and discharged. Search and rescue efforts are continuing to locate
those still missing.
The Government with the assistance of local partners and international governments and
humanitarian agencies have mobilized resources to evacuate victims and casualties and provide
primary health care, food, water and basic household items to those from affected areas. Other
international agencies, donors and governments have registered intentions and remain on
standby to provide assistance over the next few days to the Government of Samoa.
A joint rapid assessment is being undertaken by the Government and United Nations agencies
under the coordination of UNDAC.
The Government of Samoa plans to hold a national funeral service with a commemoration of
victims at its public cemetery on Tuesday 6 of October 2009.
