Information from the 2007 Census
Objectives of Presentation
• To highlight information available from the
2007 Census.
• To provide some information on the data
dissemination tools used.
Background
• For the 2007 Census, the country was
divided into 1605 Enumeration Areas (EAs)
or Census Collection Units.
• EAs are the smallest geographical collection
unit that allows us to relate information to
the places from which it was collected.
• Each EA is mapped and has a boundary

The criteria used for EA delineation include;
1. Manageable workload for Enumerators during
the enumeration period
2. Ease of identifying boundaries on the ground
3. As far as possible homogeneity of socio-
economic characteristics
4. Following administrative boundaries
The above criteria are important to ensure the
census operation is well controlled and data
gathered reliably reflects the situation on the
ground.

Background Cont…
• With the whole country divided into EAs,
we have a geographical frame that is
organised to allow as much flexibility as
possible in combining and disaggregating
data.
• This means that data can be provided
from localities up through the range of
administrative divisions and up to totals for
the country

enumerated household.
These waypoints can be overlaid with
different backdrops.
• Topographical Maps
• Cadastral Maps
• Relief Images
GPS Technology cont…
• You can select information of interest and
GPS waypoints appearing indicate
location of households with condition of
interest.
• One step further from EA as there are no
boundary restrictions.

Conclusion
• The census tries to meet the information needs
of a wide range of users
• Due to the ever increasing demand for small
area data, there have been discussion to
conduct the Census every five years
• Information released needs to meet the
confidentiality requirements of the Statistics Act.
• We are working on a request by NDMO to have
the information available for their use.
